چکیده

background and aim: human beings receive a variety of sounds in their everyday lives. these sounds are generated by different sources, and are heard simultaneously or with a small time sequence. a characteristic of the auditory system is its ability to analyze complex sounds, and to make decisions about the source of each constituent part of these sounds. the present study intends to assess normative variation of auditory stream segregation in adults. methods: this study has a cross-sectional design and was conducted on 40 normal adults with the age range of 18 to 35. stimuli were presented in the form of pure tones a and b as aba-aba triplet pattern at the intensity level of 40 dbsl. the a tone frequency was selected as the basis at 500, 1000, and 2000 hz. the b tone was presented with a difference of half to twelve and half semitones above the basis tone frequency in each phase. results: the fission boundary (fb) threshold was obtained in 500-2000 hz. fb threshold was better in low frequencies than high frequencies. fb thresholds were independent of frequency when expressed as equivalent rectangular bandwidth (erb). conclusion: fission boundary threshold increased with the increase of frequency. when we used erb, fb threshold was independent of frequency.

Auditory stream segregation in dyslexic adults.

Developmental dyslexia is often associated with problems in phonological processing based on, or accompanied by, deficits in the perception of rapid auditory changes. Thirteen dyslexic adults and 18 control subjects were tested on sequences of alternating tones of high (1000 Hz) and low (400 Hz) pitch, which at short stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) led to perceptual separation of the sound s...

Relation between Working Memory Capacity and Auditory Stream Segregation in Children with Auditory Processing Disorder

Background: This study assessed the relationship between working memory capacity and auditory stream segregation by using the concurrent minimum audible angle in children with a diagnosed auditory processing disorder (APD).Methods: The participants in this cross-sectional, comparative study were 20 typically developing children and 15 children with a diagnosed APD (age, 9–11 years) according to...

Stream segregation in the anesthetized auditory cortex

Auditory stream segregation describes the way that sounds are perceptually segregated into groups or streams on the basis of perceptual attributes such as pitch or spectral content. For sequences of pure tones, segregation depends on the tones' proximity in frequency and time. In the auditory cortex (and elsewhere) responses to sequences of tones are dependent on stimulus conditions in a simila...

preliminary normative variation of auditory p300 parameters in adult individuals

background and aim: auditory p300 is an event-related potential. cognitive factors like attention are involved in the generation of p300. it seems that normative variation of p300 is necessary for clinical purposes. thus, the current study was designed to establish preliminary normative variation of p300 amplitude and latency at fz and cz sites in adults. methods: this cross-sectional study was...

Effects of context on auditory stream segregation.

The authors examined the effect of preceding context on auditory stream segregation. Low tones (A), high tones (B), and silences (-) were presented in an ABA- pattern. Participants indicated whether they perceived 1 or 2 streams of tones. The A tone frequency was fixed, and the B tone was the same as the A tone or had 1 of 3 higher frequencies. Perception of 2 streams in the current trial incre...
